Understanding the Effect of Humidifiers on Particulate Matter Sensors

The Atmotube and Atmocube devices are designed to provide you with accurate, real-time data on the air quality in your environment. This includes measuring particulate matter (PM) concentrations, which can be influenced by the use of humidifiers. To help you get the most reliable readings from your device, we’ve put together some information on how humidifiers may affect PM sensors and what you can do to minimize any potential interference.

Types of Humidifiers

  • Ultrasonic Humidifiers: These create a fine mist using ultrasonic vibrations. The mist from these humidifiers may affect PM sensors by mimicking particulate matter. Additionally, if you're using water with a high mineral content, ultrasonic humidifiers can produce "white dust" that may be detected as PM.

  • Evaporative Humidifiers: These devices work by evaporating water into the air through a wick filter. Evaporative humidifiers are much less likely to affect PM sensor readings, making them a better choice for use with AQ monitors such as the Atmotube PRO.

Steps to Ensure Minimal Interference

When using a humidifier along with your ATMO device, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Humidifier Choice: An evaporative humidifier is preferable as it does not emit mist that can interfere with PM sensors.

  • Water Quality: If you opt for an ultrasonic humidifier, we recommend using distilled water to prevent the potential for "white dust" and to minimize interference with PM readings. Note that even when using distilled water with ultrasonic humidifiers, PM readings are still likely to be affected.

  • Regular Maintenance: It’s important to regularly clean your humidifier and replace any filters or wicks as necessary. This helps prevent the growth and dispersal of mold or bacteria, contributing to a healthier environment.
